Five Things I Liked About House of the Dragon Episode 1

The time has finally come for the series premier of House of the Dragon on HBO!

I missed out on watching Game of Thrones as it aired (and still have only seen season 1) so I felt like this is a great chance to GoT in on the Westeros action. Sorry.

Well here is the list of some of the key things I liked!

  1. Dragons! They’re in the title of the show! Rhaenerys’ mother and father both commenting that she smells like dragons after she’s been riding was very funny. Not as funny but an interesting portrayal of their traditions was the dragon used for cremation.

  2. Game of Thrones viewing isn’t necessary. It takes place ~170 years earlier so the connections are very distant from what I can tell. The opening was a bit of an info-dump but after that the historical information was well placed in relevant conversations.

  3. Viserys’ miniature kingdom is awesome.

  4. The tournament. I always love a tournament, especially if it’s some kind of battle. This one did get pretty bloody, though, so maybe I didn’t like it quite so much. Also, the battle intercut with the birth scene was very well done.

  5. Matt Smith is great at being the worst. I am rooting for Daemon’s downfall.

Overall, I’m excited to watch more, and although there were some gruesome moments, the parts that I liked definitely made it worth it.
